Determining what's next

My theme for 2025 is “try something new” and apparently that has sunk in deeply. I started roasting coffee, I was elected to the Django Steering Council, and I attended DjangoCon Africa in Tanzania. To end the year, I’m going to try to find my passion in my work.

So I quit my job.

Or at least, I’m quitting my job. I don’t know the actual end date yet. It takes some time to leave a company that you’ve been working with for nearly 12 years.

What I do know is that I’m going to find something that I’m passionate about, which brings me joy and can pay me.

I have some ideas on where to look, but I’m not sure where exactly I’ll find it. My current leads are around mentorship and entrepreneurship. I’d like to design a program to train people about various professional developer skills. If that type of program would be of interest to you, please email me!

Another amorphous idea is around funding a group of people to maintain and/or support community-based Python packages. Yeah, I clearly haven’t given this one a ton of thought, but I feel like something is there.

I’m going to try to remain open to other things, though. Which is a big challenge for me. I’m the type of person who puts their head down and grinds until the problem is solved. That trait has plenty of advantages, but relaxing to let things come to you isn’t one of them.

If you’re working on something that could use some help, please let me know. Maybe it’ll be the right fit. Worst case, we get to know each other!

In the coming months, I’ll be reworking this site to more prominently feature the fact that I’m open to part-time/short-term/medium-term projects. So if you’re looking for an extra set of hands for a project, reach out.
