Software engineer, entrepreneur, core contributor to the Phoenix Framework

Jason is a friend and colleague of mine from when we went to college together. He’s run his own consulting agency, an incredibly intelligent human, and is a core contributor to the Phoenix Framework. We meet weekly where we discuss life, career and challenges we face. These meetings have served as a source of co-mentoring for both of us over the years.

What hesitation would you have about working with Tim?

Hiring a coach has never really occurred to me. Where I come from, spending money on yourself that way just isn’t the norm. To even consider it, I’d have to deeply respect the person. Plus, I’ve found I can ask people for advice and experience and it works out. I get that from Tim every week in our conversations.

What did you find from knowing Tim?

It’d be hard to find someone more thoughtful and hardworking. He’s well-read, motivated, and genuinely gets the job done. He’s the roll-up-your-sleeves-and-figure-it-out type.

What do you like most about collaborating with Tim?

The mental health side of things. The confidence it instills knowing you’re not alone in the problems and scenarios you’re facing. Seeing Tim make coast FIRE (financial independence retire early) work and knowing that means you could too. He’s also a sounding board for ideas, problems, conference talks and is someone in the Python world I can connect with. I look forward to it every week.

What else would you want someone to know?

Tim has put serious time into Djangonaut Space and bringing people into open source globally. The coordination that requires, across cultures, time zones, and remote environments, is genuinely hard. It’s a strong signal of who he is and what drives him. There are few people who have attempted this level of work across the globe.
