Lunch Talk Series: What if you became an open source software contributor?
This iteration of the Lunch Talk Series will be covering Amanda Savluchinske’s welcoming PyLadiesCon talk, “What if you became an open source software contributor?”.
You should watch this if:
- You’re looking for guidance on how to contribute to open source
- Interested in how to find things to work on in new projects
- Want to feel inspired and confident in contributing to open source
I’ve met Amanda before at a DjangoCon US and then again when she participated in Djangonaut Space. She’s absolutely awesome and I was excited to watch this talk.
It covers a number of topics related to open source that are valuable to beginners and is well worth your time. She has sound reasoning on why to participate and solid paths forward on how to get involved today.
Amanda provides a good overview on each aspect of contributing to open source that’s not well discussed in projects’ documentation. She goes into detail about being respectful of maintainers time, how to communicate, where to look for information first and developing the understanding that issue difficult isn’t binary.
I particularly enjoyed the callout for people to be patient when participating and to learn to enjoy the feelings of participating in OSS. It’s a great message and I’m always happy to get that reminder!
